Rome (after)

Well, i'm back! Got back in about eight last night.

Seems like no time at all since I was posting before I left earlier in the week :-( But actually the four days we were there seemed to last quite long, mainly because we packed them full of stuff!

Had a well good time, but I have never walked so much in my life! You certainly need to be prepared to be on your feet a lot if you visit Rome. It was definitely worth it though, we spent two full days in the city itself and pretty much covered all the major sights.

It's a really interesting city, every corner you turn there's another impressive building or ruin, there's barely a modern building in the city! The most impressive area has to be around the Coleseum and the roman forum though. I never realised how big the forum ruins were.

On the first day we went on a hop-on/hop-off bus so we could find our way around the city and so we got to stop off at a lot of the interesting places like the Trevi fountain and the Pantheon etc.

On thursday we had a tour around the Coleseum and the area around the Palatine Hill which was well worth the money and really interesting. Again a lot of walking though!

Oh yeah it was also seriously hot! You can certainly see why all the Romans desert the city to go to the coast in August! It was a joy getting back to the hotel in the evening and having a nice air conditioned room to sleep in! Slept better than I have been doing here!

The hotel was really nice too, only problem with it being a little way out was getting back and fourth to Rome, cos the public transport, although cheap, stops stupidly early in the evenings! Thankfully though, the hotel ran a shuttle bus, so it was relatively easy as long as we didn't stay in Rome to later. Would have been nice to see it all lit up at night though.

We got a bit of time off our feet on Friday with the trip to Naples and Pompeii. Again that was really worth doing and Pompeii was amazing, way more impressive than I even expected, everything is just so well preserved and it's such a huge area too!

Could definitely have spent quite a bit longer at Pompeii because there was so much to see, but I think we got taken round the majority of the most interesting bits! Although we did miss the brothel lol. There was a massive queue to get in this place, because basically it still had the original paintings on the walls of... well, what the customers might like to try while they were there!

We didn't end up getting back til about 10:30 that night, bearing mind we got up at 5:30 to go, mainly because we were having an unplanned evening tour around Rome! We were planned to get dropped off at our hotels by the bus driver, but since we were one of the last, the english guide got off, leaving us with the italian bus driver who didn't seem to know his way to our hotel and took what can only be described as the 'scenic route'! Got there in the end though, so it was all good!

Well, there's plenty of other stuff to write about, but I think i'll leave it at this for now! Of course all the photos - about 100, are in the process of being uploaded to Gallery now!

Rome (before)

Holiday today :-D :-D

Flight is at 7:50 tonight, so got a while yet but off work so it's all good!

Can't believe this is the first proper holiday I have been on since the end of sixth form! (apart from Center Parcs) And I think it's even longer for Claire! Gonna be well good I hope. We booked a day tour thing to see Naples and Pompeii, should be really interesting to see.

Of course I'm taking my camera so hopefully I'll take stupid amounts of photos and upload them all to gallery when i get back of course!

Better start packing... more posts to follow on my return!

Tennis and Town

Just had another game of tennis with Mike, I played absolutely shockingly bad, especially in the second set but somehow still won in the end :-D 6-4 2-6 7-5

Went into town this morning to cash the money from my birthday - always worth getting up early on saturday for! Bought a few bits and bobs for going away too and the new Zutons album
.

Only two weeks on tuesday til I go to Rome :-D Can't come soon enough, although I still need to look into things to do there, not that there's likely to be a lack, i think it'll be more a problem of getting everything we want to do into four days! I'd quite like to go to Pompeii and Mount Versuvius, there are quite a lot of day tours from Rome there, just quite a long way to go that's all.

Pub time now I think.

Poole Trip

Just got back from a few days in Poole... Sadly, wasn't a holiday, we were on one of the graduate scheme courses for work, but it was so nice down there it might as well have been! To start with the hotel was very very nice. A place called Sandbanks between Poole and Bournemouth.

That was the view from the patio at the back of the hotel. I would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting somewhere to stay down that way. Very nice hotel.

The weather has been so good as well we just didn't want to come back!

Wasn't too bothered though, because I'm now going on holiday in four weeks! On a very spontaneous act from me, which is pretty unsual, I'm going to Rome from 11th to 15th July with Claire. It was literally just thought up the other day and Claire had it all booked and sorted while I was still in Poole!

No more moaning about not going on holiday this year now. Can't wait, I've never been to Italy, should be well good. We got a really good deal as well from lastminute.com. About £180 for four nights in a four star hotel including flights and insurance.

Badminton tonight. As much as I love playing it, it's mental when it's this hot, remember when we played at uni in the summer, so so warm. It's all good fun anyway. Dunno how good i'll be tonight though, cos I'm absolutley knackered, not had much sleep this week as you can imagine with 12 other graduates and a seafront full of bars!

Right anyway, better go and sort my stuff out for tomorrow, off up to Lancaster for the weekend....

Why is it I go from being stupidly bored to having so much to do I dunno where to start!!! Not complaining though :)

Center Parcs

Just got back from Center Parcs this afternoon.

Had a well good week, obviously seemed to go very quick, but we certainly managed to pack a lot into the time! I think we pretty much did every activity there, apart from a couple of the very expensive ones - it cost enough as it was :-|

We did.......

  • Pool
  • Snooker
  • Table Tennis
  • Badminton
  • Tennis
  • Swimming
  • Field Archery
  • Ten Pin Bowling
  • Golf Driving Range
  • Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting
  • and Quad Biking :)
Unsuprisingly, the Quad Biking was very very good!

Never done it before and now I would love to do it again. We got like two 20 minute trek's through woodland and serious off-road stuff. It was even better than the off-road thing I did last year in a Land Rover Defender.

Laser Clay Pigeon shooting was really good too. Done the real thing before, but this was better if anything because they could do varied games etc. The gun was exactly the same feel, weight and everything, just you could have a scoreboard and everyone could aim for the same clay!

Pretty knackered now, unsuprisingly, although we didn't do as much "physical" sport as I expected, only played badminton once! - Alex didn't want to play again because he knew i'd finish what I started and beat him ;-)

Wasn't helped at the beginning of the week by the fact neither of us got any sleep the night before we went, for me mainly due to the fact I was sleeping on his floor sober (which has never happened before suprisingly....) So the first day seemed very long! All good in the end though.

Right, better go now, people arriving from Sheffield, big night out in Notts tonight :-D

I really will be sleeping the rest of the weekend.....!!!

Real-life Simpsons

Haha, just found this....

http://www.spikedhumor.com/articles/17792/Real_Life_Simpsons_Title_Sequence.html?autoplay=true

Awesome.

I'm really not enjoying work since I got back from that grad course, had a very boring day today. Oh well. Moving in three days :-D

...then another grad course on tuesday/weds!

Oooh yeah looks like i'm going to Centre Parcs in Sherwood Forest at the end of April! Been wanting to go there for ages and since i'm not likely to get any other holiday this year, I thought i'd better take Alex up on his offer... especially since I won't have to pay for the accomodation! :)

This is turning out to be a very busy couple of months!

Probably won't be posting for a week or four now because our sodding phone line isn't connected, being a new place. BT, of course, have ripped us off charging 100 quid to do the job (even though the house has sockets already - surely it's just a connection in the exchange, how hard can it be!?). Then once we eventually get connected we need to wait for whatever crap ISP we choose to sort itself out. I really need a recommendation for a good broadband ISP!

Need money! (but need a holiday!)

Me and Alex have been looking at going travelling somewhere next year, probably America or Canada. Would absolutley love to go for like a month or something, but at this rate I don't even know if i'll be able to afford a couple of weeks!

I love my car, but it means I have absolutley no money left over every month :-| Maybe they'll give me a pay rise at work soon... maybe....

I just can't do with another year of not going away anywhere! Whatever happens next year, I am GOING to do something!

Been looking at this company called Trek America who specialise in tours around america and a load of other countries. It does actually seem really good and reasonably well priced too for what you get. But there's sooo many good ones and by the time flights and everything are done with you're talking a couple of grand for two weeks i'd say.

And the best one, by far, is called Southern Sun, it's a tour that basically takes 21 days and stops at *takes deep breathe*....
  • New York
  • Washington DC
  • Tennesse
  • Alabama
  • New Orleans (perhaps not??)
  • Texas
  • San Antonio
  • Del Rio
  • Carlsbad
  • Arizona/New Mexico
  • Mon. Valley
  • Grand Canyon
  • Lake Powell
  • Zion
  • Las Vegas
  • Disneyland
  • Los Angeles
I want to go now :(
That one's a minimum of £847 not including flights though....

Must think of a way to make some more money....
